On this day, 30 September 2000, Muhammad al-Durrah, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, was killed by Israeli occupation forces in Gaza. The scene was captured by French television channel France 2 cameraman Talal Abu Rahma. The footage showed a father desperately shielding his child while bullets tore through the area around them. The images were broadcast around the world and became one of the defining symbols of the Second Intifada. Two days earlier, on 28 September 2000, then Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon (1928–2014) entered the Noble Sanctuary of Al-Aqsa Mosque accompanied by right-wing Israeli officials and protected by around 2,000 police officers. Palestinian Muslims inside Al-Aqsa protested against his visit. The violent police response sparked widespread outrage among Palestinians and contributed to the outbreak of the Second Intifada. The uprising lasted until February 2005. During those years, nearly 5,000 Palestinians were killed, including more than 1,200 children. On the day Muhammad al-Durrah was killed, his father had taken him to Gaza City to look for a used car. After failing to find the car they were looking for, father and son began their journey home. On their way back, they became trapped in clashes near the Netzarim Junction in the middle of the Gaza Strip, which was still under Israeli occupation at the time. As the violence intensified and Israeli occupation forces opened fire, Muhammad and his father sought shelter behind a small concrete structure. Jamal desperately screamed at the Israeli soldiers to stop shooting at his child. His cries were ignored. Muhammad was hit several times and died in his father’s lap. The footage of the shooting flashed around the world. The image of a father desperately shielding his dying child became one of the defining symbols of the Second Intifada and a lasting representation of the violence experienced by Palestinians under Israeli occupation. The images of the shooting flashed around the world. Nevertheless, not a single international organisation has ever called for those responsible for the child’s killing to be put on trial. 26 years after Muhammad al-Durrah’s killing, Israel continues to kill Palestinians, including children, with impunity #TakeAPhotoToSeeWhatSoundYouGet
