William
William "Fitlo" Hunt, an 80-year-old Michigan man who spent 58 years in prison for a 1967 first-degree murder conviction, was released this Tuesday after receiving a commutation from Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Hunt, who has long maintained his innocence, was granted release due to his model behavior in prison. According to the Michael Thompson Clemency Project, Hunt was involved in an armed robbery in 1965 at age 21, but was reportedly unarmed and did not intend to harm anyone. During the robbery, Hunt’s brother — who was armed — shot and killed a cashier. Hunt refused to testify against his brother and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, despite never pulling the trigger or handling a weapon. Looking ahead, Hunt plans to become a mentor to at-risk youth and work with Community Violence Intervention through FORCE Detroit, one of the groups that supported his clemency.
