@HELP IRAQI WOMEN 🇮🇶‼️: To everyone with a voice, to everyone with the power to do something for women in Iraq and contribute to change: Please, let my voice reach women's rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence must revolve around a husband and child—that your worth is measured by how well you please them, how silently you endure the unbearable, and how much of yourselves you are willing to sacrifice. And then, the very child to whom you have dedicated your life can be taken from you. In my country, women have been given only a tiny space to live as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with our own dreams, choices, voices, and lives. And now, even motherhood itself can be taken from us. How much more must women lose before the world listens to us? Please, hear our voices. Please, help us be seen. Please, do not let Iraqi women continue to hide behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never built to protect them.

@Lily:Help us! In Iraq, women are allowed to marry as young as nine, and mothers are stripped of custody. If a mother refuses, she is imprisoned, even if the father is unfit to care for the child. Women are also not allowed to divorce their husbands; if they wish to do so, they must pay a sum of money. Furthermore, a husband may cheat on his wife, and she has no right to seek a divorce. Help us! Women are also killed simply for mistakes, and the sentence for the murderer is only three years in prison. Help us!

Under Iraq’s Jaafari Personal Status Law, girls can be married off at the age of 9, as if they were mentally mature and capable of taking on the responsibilities of marriage and managing a household. Yet, on the other hand, they cannot choose whether to live with their father or mother until they turn 18, on the grounds that they are not mature enough to make such a decision before that age. How can a 9-year-old girl be considered capable of marriage and its responsibilities, while being considered too immature to choose which parent she wants to live with for another nine years? Isn't this a clear contradiction?
