@ggir4g: Kösem Sultan was one of the most influential women of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century. She was born around 1589 and is believed to have come from a Greek family. Her original name was probably Anastasia. At a young age, she entered the harem of Sultan Ahmed I and became his favorite consort. She gave birth to several of his children, including the future sultans Murad IV and Ibrahim I. After Ahmed I’s death in 1617, Kösem continued to hold significant influence at the Ottoman court. Her role became especially important during the reigns of her sons and her grandson Mehmed IV. Kösem Sultan twice held the position of Valide Sultan — the mother of the reigning sultan. She was actively involved in state affairs and became one of the most powerful women in the Ottoman Empire. In 1651, Kösem Sultan was killed during a palace power struggle. Her death became one of the most well-known events of the period known as the “Sultanate of Women.”
