@ksgarner: We’ve become so disconnected from the humans behind our clothes that a $685 hand crafted dress can seem shocking. But someone, somewhere, made every garment we wear. I’m breaking down the cost of this dress to show what goes into making clothing, and hopefully make us think a little more about the people behind the price tag. 💚💗 #wedding #weddingdress #nontraditionalwedding #slowfashion #slowfashionmovement

The material looks a little scratchy but other than that it’s absolutely horrid!

Good for you but as a sewist myself that dress is MAXIMUM 3 hours work if you know what you're doing+ materials so idk that still seems overpriced to me

I mean you just kinda explained the steps but it's hard to connect it back to the price? How long does it take to make, what are the costs of materials etc

$300 maximum. Unless the fabric costs hundreds of dollars i don't get where 600 is coming from.

yeah, I still don’t understand how it’s that expensive even with time and all that… And also adding mistakes to the list of things that customer has to pay for is actually crazy[Crying] only you should pay for your mistake

That is an obscene amount of money for that basic pattern.

The so-called seamstresses in these comments with comments on time/cost seem to be forgetting it’s not about someone handing her some fabric and pattern! THIS WAS CUSTOM.

This makes it very clear to me that the general public has NO IDEA how much a garment/quilt/anything actually costs. We have become so disconnected from the labor that people think charging for mistakes is somehow just a you thing… no baby! Every company bakes in the cost for mistakes! Humans are making each piece, even in fast fashion, ofc there will be mistakes. So now let’s think about that for a dress that’s $30 at target (really a $10-$15 dress once it’s on sale which is also planned for). They’ll always plan for 50% profit margin, so let’s say the cost of the dress is… $7?? Now extrapolated across thousands of units… how much do we think the sewists are making after the factories take their own profit?

everyone in these comment glazing over the slide that says pattern drafting and sampling??? for those who don’t understand she designed the pattern from scratch, and then made samples of the dress, and revisions until it was perfect, THEN she can actually start sewing the real dress. it definitely took way more than 3 hours, it probably took multiple days. and it’s actually sad to see other sewists in the comments trying to invalidate her worth. the sewing community should be lifting each other up. it think the dress looks amazing and $685 is a steal for a wedding dress
