It’s NOT “cool” to have a chronic illness. It’s “cool” to accept the way your body is functioning and live life despite all of it. It’s “cool” to be empowered to seek the answers you deserve and not stop fighting for the care you need. It’s “cool” to have limitations and choose to see the abundance in them, using creativity to expand your life. We create content and be loud because community is incredibly valuable. It’s the reason some people have the strength to keep fighting, find the answers they’ve been searching for, and finally feel like they aren’t alone and what they’re experiencing is real and not just normal. It can look like self diagnosis and trends because that’s simply how social media algorithms work. You see a piece of content you relate to that captures your experience, like or watch it, and the algorithm serves you more of that. Even if you had never said those symptoms out loud. It doesn’t stop there. That information gets taken to a healthcare provider, and it’s just the start of solving these issues. It may look like it’s the only thing we talk about and our whole identity, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. My diagnoses are the least interesting thing about me. When I meet people, it’s sometimes weeks or months before they even know any of the health issues I have. In fact, I try not to talk too much about them because I worry that people don’t want to hear about it even though it does impact so much of my life. But again, with social media, people look to someone on a specific topic, so that’s what we talk about. I’m not faking it. I’m not sick because I’ve made it my identity and refused to give it up. I’m not using it for clout. I don’t want any of these conditions. I would love to live a normal life and to have been able to have a normal college experience, to be able to go out like most 24 year old do, and travel as easily as most people. But I can’t. So I’ve chosen to embrace that as my reality right now. And when things change, I’ll be an example to show others what’s possible. This is NOT a journey of being sick. It is a journey of healing.
