💜 Nathaly Ramirez. Nathaly was only 23 years old—a young mother from the Bronx whose life was tragically taken this week. Early Tuesday morning, October 6, Nathaly was at her apartment with her 8-month-old daughter when, according to police, she and her baby were pushed from the balcony of their 15th-floor apartment. A neighbor reported hearing Nathaly desperately pleading, “Please don’t do this. My baby…” before the unimaginable happened. 💔 Nathaly died from the fall. Her baby survived, and investigators believe Nathaly’s own body may have helped protect her daughter from an even more devastating impact. Her little girl was initially in critical condition and has since been reported to be stable and improving. (NBC New York) What makes this even more heartbreaking is that authorities have said there was a history of domestic violence involving Nathaly and her ex-boyfriend. Police say officers had responded to the apartment previously, including an incident in which he was accused of slapping Nathaly and another in which he was accused of breaking into her apartment. Her ex-boyfriend, Angel Carrasco, was arrested today and is facing charges including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and assault. The investigation is ongoing. And this is exactly why we have to keep talking about domestic violence. Because sometimes the warning signs are there. Sometimes there have already been police calls. Sometimes there has already been fear, control, threats or violence. And sometimes people still don’t understand how dangerous the situation has become until it is too late. Nathaly should still be here. Her daughter should still have her mother. And a young woman who had her entire life ahead of her should have had the opportunity to watch her baby grow up. So during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let’s stop asking women: “Why didn’t she just leave?” Ask instead: “What could we have done to help her feel safe enough to leave?” Believe women. Listen when someone says they’re afraid. Don’t minimize controlling or violent behavior. Don’t assume what happens inside someone’s home is “none of our business.” And if you are experiencing domestic violence, please know this: You are not weak. You are not alone. You are not to blame. And you deserve to live without fear. 💜 Today, I’m thinking about Nathaly, her baby girl, and every woman whose name we know—and every woman whose name we don’t. May Nathaly never become just another headline. #DomesticViolenceAwareness #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth #DVAM #RememberNathaly #NathalyRamirez
