The machines producing AI deepfakes are controlled by a handful of powerful corporations and the billionaires behind them, yet the proposed law does little to challenge that concentration of power. These companies built their technology using people’s writing, artwork, photographs, and voices, often without consent or compensation. Now they have machines capable of reproducing our faces, voices, creativity, and even our labour, potentially replacing the very people whose work helped build them. Giving people legal ownership of their own likeness might sound like progress, but it shifts the burden onto individuals to defend their rights against corporations with far greater financial and legal resources. Worse still, it risks turning our identities into commodities. When someone’s face or voice becomes something that can be bought and sold, those struggling financially may have little choice but to sell theirs. Real protection should mean prohibiting the copying or imitation of someone’s identity without their explicit consent, while also preventing employers from making that consent a condition of employment. And if these technologies were built using the collective work and creativity of millions of people, shouldn’t the public have a say in who owns and controls them? Instead, we have a system where immense corporate wealth translates into political influence, helping ensure that the people who created the value rarely get to share in the power or profits. The issue isn’t just who owns our faces. It’s who owns the machines that can reproduce them, and who gets to profit from our identities. We share interesting science content.
