The Four Musketeers were one of the most iconic lion coalitions ever recorded in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Consisting of four brothers, Scarface, Morani, Sikio, and Hunter… they ruled vast territories, including the famous Marsh Pride, Paradise Pride, Musiara Marsh, and parts of the Mara Triangle, for nearly a decade. Born around 2007–2008, the brothers matured together before beginning their nomadic life. Around 2011–2012, they successfully took over the Marsh Pride, marking the beginning of one of the longest and most celebrated reigns by any wild male lion coalition. Unlike most male lions, which typically hold territory for only 2–3 years, the Four Musketeers remained dominant for almost 10 years, earning worldwide recognition through wildlife documentaries, photographers, and conservationists. Scarface (c. 2007 – June 11, 2021) * The coalition’s most famous and recognizable member. * Easily identified by the deep scar over his right eye, received during a territorial fight around 2012, which later caused partial blindness. * Known for his extraordinary resilience, surviving numerous territorial battles and even recovering after being speared by a local herdsman. * Passed away peacefully from natural causes on June 11, 2021, at approximately 14 years old, making him one of the oldest wild male lions in the Maasai Mara. Morani (c. 2007–2008 – last seen May/June 2023) * His name means “Warrior” in Swahili. * The powerful enforcer and ultimately the last surviving Musketeer. * Continued living as an aging nomad after the loss of his brothers, demonstrating remarkable resilience. * Last reliably observed around May–June 2023 at an estimated 15–16 years of age. He is presumed to have died of old age/natural causes, although no confirmed remains were found. Sikio (c. 2007–2008 – c. 2016/2017) * Recognized by his striking dark mane and distinctive appearance. * Often regarded as the coalition’s strategic member during territorial patrols. * Suffered a severe leg injury during later years of the coalition. * Disappeared around 2016–2017 and is presumed to have died in the wild from the consequences of his injuries or subsequent territorial conflicts. Hunter (c. 2007–2008 – c. 2018) * The quiet and elusive member of the coalition. * Earned his name after an impressive encounter in which he reportedly grabbed a Cape buffalo by the throat. * Played a major role in defending and expanding the coalition’s territory despite remaining less visible than Scarface. * Believed to have died around 2018, most likely from injuries sustained during territorial conflicts, although no exact date or cause was officially documented. One by one, the brothers were lost to age and the hardships of life in the wild, but together they left one of the greatest legacies in the history of the Maasai Mara.
