For decades, Germany had an extraordinarily successful model:
high-value manufacturing + exports + relatively cheap energy + international demand = prosperity.
The problem was that, for many years, fiscal stability was prioritized while necessary investment was postponed. Bureaucracy is enormous, digitalization has progressed very slowly, and the German automotive industry is now facing a deep crisis.
On top of this came major strategic mistakes: Germany failed to foresee in time that China would become a serious competitor, while simultaneously building a strong dependence on Russian energy.
Germany also has an ageing population, which is putting increasing pressure on the labour market and social welfare systems.
The economic crisis is now exposing problems that had already existed within the German state and society for a long time. don't blame the people
