@bearings.travel: Bailey Island Bridge, Harpswell, Maine. Locals call it the Cribstone Bridge: about 10,000 tons of granite slabs stacked crisscross with no mortar, so the tide runs through it. Finished in 1928, and you can still drive or walk across it for free. #maine #newengland #hiddenhistory #engineering #bridges #harpswell #cascobay #bearingstravel
Ahhh yes because a tide could never move up and down underneath a normal bridge

It's walkable & there are really good restaurants on both ends of the bridge. Nearby is Cook's!

Driven it hundreds of times when I lived in Maine. Beautiful area, I almost always visit when I am in Maine. I’ve kayaked through that gap as the tide changes, if you catch it right the water is really moving. Pretty narrow road though. I wouldn’t want to drive across it in wider vehicles.

You can barely squeeze two cars and they have to block off the whole bridge when any equipment or anything goes through 😅😂

I grew up on this island!! One time a truck didn’t back up when my school bus was going over the bridge and it clipped the mirror off the bus 😅. My profile pic is from land’s end!

This is kinda dumb, there are plenty of bridges that have large gaps for water.

Bearings: Your Local Guide :
Local lore says the engineer copied a bridge he'd seen in Scotland that is long gone. Nobody has ever named it. Do you buy that story?
