@bearings.travel: New England's nine Shaker villages. Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut had nine of them. Eight closed between the 1870s and 1992 and became museums, private homes and state prison land. Sabbathday Lake in Maine never closed. #newengland #shakers #thenandnow #hiddenhistory #maine #newhampshire #massachusetts #bearingstravel
There's literally a Shaker Village on the line of New Gloucester and Poland, Maine. We have an entire class called "Shaker Studies" that high schoolers can take and a bus takes them to the village.

When i went to gng , it was thw only high school you could learn about the shakers and meet them and learn from them. We got to go places the public couldn’t. First hand stories from shakers our teacher had a great relation ship. I switched high schools just for that class. It was magical in a way and i was grateful for that class.

My grandmother used to help volunteer with the sabbath day lake shakers, I remember going every weekend, brother Arnold is so sweet and kind. I remember playing with my dolls in sister June’s room while my grandmother helped out around the community kitchen they were all always so nice and welcoming ❤️

I grew up about 20 minutes from Canterbury, New Hampshire and driving over to Shaker Village was always so beautiful. Seeing how they lived was fascinating and there were still shakers living there until I was 12.

My grandmother has one of the old shaker roads in her back yard. My cousins and I would go out in the woods and look at all the rock walls we also found carved stone stairs

"Simple Gifts" (1848) is credited to Elder Joseph Brackett of the Maine Shakers at Alfred. Which of the nine have you actually been to?

🧛🏻♀️ Plants & ¬Gender 🌿 :
The one in Albany recently had the 'Ann Lee Pond' taken over by presumably military factions of some variety. They started ecological holocausting the nature, and putting up gaslighting signs about "restoration of migrating birds" but I'm a botanist and it's just lies. The metal pole is so loud, I myself used electrical tape to mitigate the constant metal slamming sound against the America flag pole. It used to be an ice skate pond, but now it's just nothing but overgrowth and aggression male white colonized mow down shit hole. They also put a stone memorial, like a grave right by the pond... Hasn't been engraved yet. We'll see if it's shaker heritage, or military... Damn shame. The Ann Lee site is also so so boring. They could plant many native orchards, pollinator gardens, successional native shade tall trees, but instead it's just a mowing budget.
