#creatorsearchinsights #kenyatouristattractions #kenyanpeople #fyp #breakingnewstoday Today, Wilson Airport is one of the busiest airports in East and Central Africa by aircraft movement. But behind its name is the remarkable story of Florence Kerr Wilson, a wealthy widow who helped pioneer aviation in Kenya and built the aviation business that would become closely associated with the airport. A Wealthy Widow With an Unusual Vision Florence was born in 1879 in Blundellsands, near Liverpool, into a wealthy shipping family. She married William Herbert Wilson, and the couple eventually settled in Kenya, where they took up farming. When Major Wilson died in 1928, Florence was left a wealthy widow. A year later, a journey to Britain would change the course of her life—and Kenyan aviation. Rather than travelling by sea, Florence flew by aircraft, with pilot Tom Campbell Black and flight engineer Archie Watkins as crew. According to historical accounts, Florence and Campbell Black began a romantic relationship. Inspired by aviation, Florence invested £50,000 to establish Wilson Airways. She purchased a Gypsy Moth, a small single-passenger open-cockpit aircraft, and Campbell Black became the company's chief pilot and managing director. From One Aircraft to an Aviation Empire Wilson Airways began carrying mail and passengers across British East Africa, serving destinations including Mombasa, Kisumu and Dar es Salaam. Campbell Black reportedly became the first pilot to fly from Nairobi to Mombasa and return on the same day. Florence learned to fly and obtained her pilot's licence by 1930, allowing her to undertake survey flights. The company's first permanent airfield was the Ngong Landing Field at Dagoretti, near the area where Junction Mall stands today. Historical accounts recall that Maasai cattle sometimes grazed on the airfield and had to be moved before aircraft could land. As Wilson Airways expanded, its fleet eventually grew to 17 aircraft. The operation was later moved to Lang'ata, attracting wealthy businesspeople, safari groups and even members of the royal family. Florence also established what is described in historical accounts as Kenya's first air ambulance rescue service and an aviation training school. But behind the company's success was also a dramatic personal story. Campbell Black eventually became involved with Nairobi socialite and aviator Beryl Markham. In 1933, he left Kenya for Britain. He later married actress Florence Desmond in 1936, but died that September in an aircraft crash. Florence's aviation empire would eventually be taken out of her hands. During World War II, the colonial government requisitioned the airfield, aircraft and pilots. The facility was renamed Nairobi West Aerodrome, while the operation became part of the Royal Air Force and later the Kenya Auxiliary Air Unit. After the war, the airport continued to operate successfully—but Florence Wilson no longer controlled the aviation empire she had built. Then, years later, came a remarkable twist. In 1962, the incoming government sent Minister of Commerce and Communications Masinde Muliro to oversee the renaming of the airport in Florence's honour. Florence was reportedly present for the unveiling as the airport officially took the name Wilson Airport. Six years later, in 1968, Florence Kerr Wilson died at her home in Karen. Today, thousands of passengers and aircraft pass through Wilson Airport, but many may never know the extraordinary story behind its name a woman who helped establish Kenya's early aviation industry, built Wilson Airways from the ground up, lost her aviation empire during wartime, and ultimately lived to see the airport bear her name. ❤️❤️ 👉 Follow and Support my TikTok account and share my content with your friends.
