To everyone who has a voice to be heard, and to everyone who has the ability to do something for women in Iraq and contribute to making a change: please, let my voice reach women’s rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence must revolve around a husband and a child—that your worth is determined by how well you please them, how silently you endure the unbearable, and how much of yourself you are willing to sacrifice. Then the very child to whom you have devoted your lives may be taken away from you. In my country, women are given very little space to live as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with our own dreams, choices, voices, and lives. Now, even motherhood itself can be taken away from us. How much more do women have to lose before the world listens to us? Please, hear our voices. Please, help us to be seen. Please, do not let Iraqi women continue to hide behind laws, traditions and systems that were not built to protect them
