@inmind71: What did the Buddha actually teach in the Kālāma Sutta? When the Kālāmas were confused by competing teachers, the Buddha did not simply tell them to believe him. He showed them how to examine what leads to harm and suffering, and what leads to welfare and happiness. The discourse is often reduced to “do not believe anything,” but the Buddha’s teaching goes much further. He asks the Kālāmas to examine greed, hatred and delusion, their consequences, and the qualities that arise when these are abandoned. He then gives the four assurances, including how to live wisely even when questions about rebirth and the results of actions beyond this life are not yet directly known.
