To everyone who has a voice that can be heard, and to everyone who has the power to do something for women in Iraq and help create change: please, let my voice reach women’s rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence should revolve around a husband and a child — that your worth depends on how well you please them, how quietly you endure, and how much of yourself you are willing to sacrifice. And then, even the child you devoted your life to can be taken away from you. In my country, women have been given so little space to exist as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with dreams, choices, voices, and lives of our own. And now, even motherhood itself can be taken from us. How much more are women expected to lose before the world listens? Please hear our voices. Please help us be seen. And please do not let Iraqi women continue to disappear behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never built to protect them.

Hi, I’m an Iraqi girl, and I want to tell you about something happening in Iraq that many Iraqi women are deeply concerned about. A new amendment to Iraq’s Personal Status Law has introduced a legal framework based on religious jurisprudence, including Ja’fari jurisprudence. Many women are worried that this could reduce protections they currently have and affect important matters such as marriage, divorce, custody, and women’s rights within the family. For many Iraqi women, this is not simply a religious issue. We are concerned about how these legal changes could affect our lives, choices, safety, and rights. We are speaking up because we believe Iraqi women deserve laws that protect them equally and guarantee their dignity and rights. I wanted you to know about this because many people outside Iraq may not know what Iraqi women are currently facing or why they are raising their voices.
