@seniorlivinginsider: Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurological syndrome where language and communication abilities progressively decline, and it can be one of the ways frontotemporal degeneration presents. In this video, I break down two forms most closely associated with FTD: 🧠 Semantic variant PPA (svPPA): difficulty understanding the meaning of words and recognizing familiar people, objects, or concepts 🧠 Nonfluent/agrammatic variant PPA (nfvPPA): difficulty producing speech (speech may become slow, effortful, halting, or grammatically simplified) There is also a third major variant, logopenic PPA (lvPPA), which I don’t focus on here because its underlying pathology is more commonly associated with Alzheimer’s disease than FTD. And an important reminder: PPA is not simply “forgetting words.” It is a progressive disorder affecting the brain’s language networks. Memory and intelligence may remain relatively preserved, particularly earlier in the disease, which is why it can be especially frustrating for the people experiencing it. 😔 #FTD #frontotemporaldementia #FTDawarenessweek #dementia #PPA

I suspect FTD for my mom and doctors literally won’t tell us anything other than..yeah Alzheimer’s. She literally can’t use her hands and arms or stand up straight anymore. But behavioral is what we noticed first.
