The demonstrations began over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating school buildings, before spreading from Paris to schools across the country. More than 100 schools have suffered severe damage, according to Education Minister Édouard Geffray, while 65 members of school staff have been injured, including 40 headteachers. Dramatic scenes have emerged from several cities, with schools and bins set on fire, riot police deploying tear gas and a fire engine being attacked and burned in Marseille. One of the worst incidents occurred at Nelson Mandela High School in Nantes, where a fire spread into the building and damaged its cafeteria and other areas. The school, which serves around 1,700 students, is expected to remain closed for several weeks. Authorities say 1,949 people were arrested on Thursday alone, while 305 police officers have been injured. More than 1,000 secondary schools have now been affected by demonstrations, with blockades reported at 222 of them. While many students have continued to demonstrate peacefully, French authorities say some protests have escalated into serious disorder, with the government holding a crisis meeting as the unrest continues.
