The irony is using punitive measures is actually the lazier way of parenting. It’s do much more work figuring out the source of a behavior in your kid, validating the emotion, and guiding them to make more thoughtful choices.

It’s actually pretty easy to give direction without hitting a person or intentionally dysregulating them so they shut down

People who use punitive parenting are really simply justifying the abuse of their kids. And they get BIG MAD when told it doesn’t work AND is harmful.

a lot of ppl think that parents should "teach" their kids about how the world can be harsh, dangerous, and apathetic by modeling that dynamic first. it's actually crazy. they're just adults who never learned how to cope in the world.

Our society is so oppressively close-minded. It’s exhausting.

Consequences don't have to be harsh or lack structure. Instead of "Give me your phone!", try "You used your phone inappropriately, so you will lose it for a week and these are the behaviors I want to see for you to get it back."

I’ve spent hours if not days allowing my son to process his emotions and be there with him as he does it, and it does take a lot of time and it is exhausting. And yes I am doing it to raise a better citizen and community member.

so is the goal to shift from fear-based personal living when single to a love-based life in married life and then love-based in family life?

I hope you continue to stand your ground. Your framework is absolutely helpful and very useful in reality as a former child myself.

Thank you so much for making this follow up video. What I’ve also noticed is that parents who punish have scared inner children themselves and punishing gives them a sense of authority and control which keeps their own vulnerability at bay. Thank you again for putting this important work out there!

I have 3 incredible adult kids that are kind, involved in their community, and have empathy. Never spanked them once bc I know to communicate like a grown up.

My kid wrecked his new headphone in his locker. Completely by accident. He felt terrible. We bought him new ones and had a discussion about being more careful. Told him what would be the point in us getting mad. He clearly felt bad, he told us what honestly happened and took ownership of the error. I helped him regulate himself because he was upset. You're growing up and are human, mistakes are going to happen. What can we learn from what happened? Now he knows that we're not going to get mad at a simple human mistake and he can continue to be honest with us.

My sister is a primary teacher and I'm a dog trainer. I have to bite my tongue on the regular to stop myself comparing the two (ppl get heated at the comparison) but the overlap really is wild. Nothing says lazy quite like compulsion training. Not to say it isn't effective - it often is - but it's almost always the laziest, least curious method.
