To everyone with a voice, and to everyone who has the power to do something for women in Iraq and contribute to change: Please, amplify my voice to women's rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence must revolve around a husband and child, that your worth depends on how well you please them, how silent and patient you are, and how much of yourself you are willing to give up. Then, even the child you dedicated your life to can be taken from you. In my country, women have never been given enough space to be human beings in their own right. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with our own dreams, choices, voices, and lives. And now, even motherhood itself can be taken from us. How much more must women lose before the world hears their voices? Please, hear our voices. Help us be seen. Do not allow Iraqi women to continue to hide behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never built to protect them.

The enactment of a new law known as the “Jaafari Personal Status Code” in Iraq has raised serious concerns regarding women’s rights and legal protections. We urgently call upon women’s rights organizations worldwide to support Iraqi women and stand up for their rights, dignity, equality, and protection under the law. We urge the international community to listen to the voices of Iraqi women and stand with them in their pursuit of justice, equality, and equal rights. Join us in solidarity through peaceful demonstrations and by raising awareness on social media using relevant hashtags. Stand with Iraqi women. Stand for justice. Stand for equality.

Many women feel that their rights are being limited, and concerns have been raised about the Jaafari Personal Status Law, including provisions that could affect girls at a very young age. This is deeply concerning and deserves public attention. Let’s raise awareness, speak up, and call for the protection of women’s and girls’ rights. 🛑This so-called Jaafari law strips women of their rights to such an extent that, if a man kills a woman, he may not be held fairly accountable for his actions. The maximum punishment he may face could be three years in prison or less, and he may even be released on bail, in addition to other, even more severe violations. Even when it comes to custody, if a woman gets divorced, custody automatically goes to the man. There has even been a documented case in which a man was granted custody while he was serving a prison sentence. Another shocking case involved a woman whose husband filmed her in compromising situations while she was asleep and shared the images. When she sought a divorce, the court rejected her request on the grounds that this was not sufficient reason to grant a separation. Furthermore, if a woman experiences domestic violence and reports it to the police, they may take no meaningful deterrent action other than forcing the abuser to sign a written pledge. If a husband abuses and beats his wife and her family attempts to intervene to protect her, the family members themselves may face legal questioning and punishment. And these are only some of the many other unjust provisions and consequences that women may face.
