@madegooduk: Every egg you buy has a number on the shell, 0 to 3. It tells you how the hen lived, and a 3 means a cage. THE CODE 0 organic: flock capped at 3,000, six hens a square metre, no routine beak trimming 1 free range: outdoor access, no legal flock cap, industry schemes allow 16,000 2 barn: indoors, nine hens a square metre 3 cage: still legal, about one in seven UK eggs, less usable space than a sheet of A4 each THE MARKS RSPCA Assured: farms inspected against RSPCA welfare standards British Lion: food safety and salmonella, not welfare. It's on the barn boxes too Soil Association: organic plus 10 square metres outdoors per hen instead of 4, outside from 12 weeks, no beak trimming. Not at Tesco OUR PICKS, per egg 🥇 Purely Organic 10, 52p. Code 0 plus RSPCA Assured, the only box on the shelf with both 🥈 Tesco Organic 6, 47p. Code 0, and cheaper per egg than Happy Egg free range at 48p ➕ Soil Association organic. Farm shops and veg boxes ❌ Barn. Code 2. Indoors for life, and the only plastic pack on the shelf was a barn box One thing I couldn't fit in. Purely Organic is made by Noble Foods, the same company behind Happy Egg, Freshlay and Big & Fresh barn eggs. It doesn't change the pick. The code and the marks are checked box by box, which is exactly why you read the shell, not the brand. On carbon. Most of an egg's footprint is the feed, not the hen. Organic hens eat more feed for every egg they lay, so per egg organic can come out higher on carbon than free range. What organic buys is the hen's life and the land the feed grows on. That's the trade, and this video is the hen side of it. Got a farm shop or small flock near you doing Soil Association eggs? Drop it below so I can add it to the list. #eggs #freerange #sustainableswaps #ecoswaps #madegood

I don't understand how a code 1 egg can even legally be called 'free range'

I will only purchase code 0 eggs from now on, I don’t think anything higher than a 1 should even be on the shelves tbh, and all cages should be outlawed totally

there really needs to be more education on the way animals are treated in animal agriculture industry. i think many more people would be vegan if they knew

When you buy it, the shop already owns it, so that means the eggs were already bought no matter whether you buy it or not, Tesco still will

If you really really want good free range eggs, go to a local smallholder who raises chickens. Most of them don't raise more than 100-300 and the prices aren't anywhere near as expensive as supermarkets. Ours are £4 a dozen and this is where they come from: Beryl!

The best thing to do is just have your own chickens , I have 19 chickens it cost around £20 a month max with food bedding etc , they eat almost anything so any scraps of food they clear up
