🚨 How DDoS Botnets Take Websites Offline — And How Ethical Hackers Defend Against Them Ever wondered how a website can suddenly become unavailable even though the server itself hasn't been hacked? One answer is a Distributed Denial-of-Service attack (DDoS). A typical botnet-based DDoS attack works like this: 1️⃣ A threat actor compromises vulnerable computers, servers, routers, or IoT devices. 2️⃣ Those compromised devices become part of a botnet — a network of infected machines controlled remotely. 3️⃣ The attacker coordinates the compromised devices through command-and-control infrastructure. 4️⃣ The botnet sends a large volume of unwanted requests or traffic toward a target. 5️⃣ The target's network, application, or server resources can become overwhelmed, preventing legitimate users from accessing the service. The important part for an ethical hacker isn't learning how to take a website offline. It's learning how to recognize and stop the attack. 🛡️ Defensive approach: • Monitor unusual traffic spikes and request patterns • Use rate limiting and traffic filtering • Deploy DDoS protection/CDN services where appropriate • Protect servers and network infrastructure from exposed services • Keep routers, IoT devices, and servers patched • Remove default credentials and strengthen authentication • Monitor outbound traffic to detect compromised devices • Segment vulnerable devices from critical systems • Maintain an incident-response plan • Work with your hosting provider or ISP during large attacks During a security assessment, DDoS testing should only be performed with explicit authorization and within an agreed testing scope. A safer learning approach is to study the attack architecture, analyze logs, and practice detection and mitigation in an isolated lab. The goal of ethical hacking is not to make systems unavailable. The goal is to understand how attacks work so we can make systems harder to attack. Educational purposes only. Test only systems you own or have explicit permission to assess. #CyberSecurity #EthicalHacking #DDoS #Botnet #CyberDefense
