Why do we even need fraternities? Maybe I’m being naive, but it just seems like they exist to “other” people… as in the frat members are somehow better because they paid for their friends. I don’t see the purpose or value.

Wow you distilled how i approach news stories in the last 10 years. I used to be such a news junkie. I was constantly clicking reading and often found that the drips and draps was wasted time and I could wait a few days, weeks or months for more thoughtful journalism or more firm facts. Instead of a blotter. Also it really just fried my nerves each time i had to read drips and draps of the same upsetting news.

Title IX and in-house counsel are the same as HR. They are there to protect the institution, not the individuals. The entire system is set up to protect the system.

HFF, what is concerning me about the information people are finding is the AI of it all. It's too easy to doctor texts, videos and to just make stuff up and people are incentivized by clicks and views. This is the era we are in. 😩

I think there is a lot of shame that goes around understanding accountability also. As a fellow Jane Doe, I spent a lot of time blaming myself because I “put myself in that situation” and somehow it felt that I allowed it to happen and that I was to blame for the decisions of other people. And for that reason, it didn’t immediately feel like an assault.

agree. it's so important that the ppl who interview victims are trained and are trauma-informed understand what a "fawn" response is. it's so normal for victims to minimise what has happened as a coping mechanism

Folks online are also jumping to conclusions way to quick these days, like let’s let all the facts out but no one seems to have patience with the process anymore

Appreciate your focus on the process SO much as a person who was too scared to go through it at that age. It’s healing to not see it as this big mysterious maze but instead a system of processes.

this Cornell case made me want to rewatch the documentary The Hunting Ground, about how Title IX came into play for victims on college campuses. Definitely worth a watch, it's great

my husband was in a frat when all Greek life was suspended at our college, so none of the frats or sororities were able to be nationally recognized or actively recruit on campus that year but they all still existed underground. they weren't officially doing frat things but they were all still doing frat things. so maybe it wa something like that. Cornell didn't recognize their frat for that school year so they still existed socially but not officially.
