I always read the cover letters for our applicants. And bad cover letters do kick you out of the running when I’m on the search committee

I hate when a company won’t let you advance through their application system without attaching one. Knowing they aren’t reading them!

My team starts to read cover letters to help narrow a long list down to a short list for screening calls. We’re not reading hundreds of letters but we might read 15-20 and start looking at LinkedIns to get down to a top 8-10.

I tell my clients the cover letter is for the hiring manager, not the recruiter. I'm sure plenty of them don't read it either, but I know many who do, because the recruiter has already screened it down to a manageable number

I have never read a cover letter as an HR manager. We don’t have time. We are overwhelmed with responsibilities. We are struggling.

I think jobs that require it just want to make it harder to apply to them. To attract people who are more serious about that particular job

Genuine question when you say that you help people craft their cover letter are people you’re working with just submitting the same cover letter to every application and not tailoring the cover letter to every single job

CV are silly and outdated practice. but as someone that was applying for jobs all Summer and just got hired, I begrudgingly did one each time simply bcus I didn’t want to get ruled out over it. to your point Since all my applications were within same industry I just reused the same template over and over 😆
