@econwithsarah: 10/2/2026: The September jobs report: what’s the hidden number that I think reveals why the economy feels so badly and what the report reveals about AI, tech, and purchasing power (and what the Fed might do next) #economics #finance #inflation
Yep, as usual, you nailed it. Wage growth continues to slow. It's a one-two punch of inflation and wages not keeping pace, and most Americans are punch drunk as a result.

I used to buy protein bars and the box has increased in price by four dollars in the last two weeks. When it increased by two dollars, I stopped buying it.

Why does wage growth neglect to consider that few people, if any, get monthly raises? We feel inflation for a full year, then hope our wages catch up. And 2-3% raises don’t do it. What am I missing - or more importantly what are these analysts missing?

I hate that the unemployment number is not the number of people who aren’t working. It’s very misleading 💜

I graduated college in 2020 and it's shocking how little my wages have grown relative to inflation. I had more purchasing power as a new grad than I do 6 years into my professional career.

Also, IMO, sentiment would not be SO bad if we weren't constantly assaulted by the frivolous spending of money by this administration. They keep waving in our face that there IS money, they just refuse to share it with any of us. So it's not like as a whole we're struggling because of something like a global pandemic. We're struggling because this administration full of billionaires is embezzling our tax dollars all the while blaming us for being unhappy about it.

If I worked full time at my job, I'd be making the same annual income I accepted after graduating college in 1999. Except back then rent for my bougie one bedroom apt was only $600/mo. How can I make the same with 27 years' experience?? insane.

It took me 1.5 years to find a job. I’ve been at it now for about 1 year. 63 yo woman in IT. 20% cut in pay but fully remote. I was lucky to get it.

When you mentioned Pre Covid and post Covid numbers I immediately thought these are two different economies. Inflation that stays around for this long hurts the consumer

The divorce between stock market, and on the ground market realities continues to perplex. If you aren’t investing, you probably feel a lot of stress right now. And even if you are, you’re probably wondering why it’s not enough for housing — worried for when it all crashes.

Fair warning that this is just anecdote, but I work with an organization that provides a COLA salary bump every year along with performance raises and even with these adjustments it still feels like inflation and prices are getting away from me

I'm curious what assumptions go into the statistics they're running on the samples that generate these numbers. Statistics are meant to be meaningful, which these seem not to be.

can you explain in more detail why you describe this as backwards? I grew up with the punch bowl analogy, so it makes perfect sense to me that if the jobs report says, hey, the party isn't all that merry after all, so that would naturally cause the Fed to not spike the punch so much, and that would be good news for business and therefore the stock market. Is this not how it is always been? Why is this considered backwards?
