1) Talk about money properly. How much you earn, how much you spend, how much you save. Who pays for what. What happens when one earns more. Most couples skip this because it feels transactional. It’s the opposite. It’s trust. 2) Talk about alone time. How much do you each need. What does it look like. Can you be in the same flat and not be “together”? Some people need a closed door. Some people feel rejected by a closed door. Find out before you’re sharing one. 3) Talk about how you fight. What happens when you’re angry. Do you go quiet. Do you raise your voice. Do you need space or do you need to talk it through immediately. Living together means you can’t leave the argument. You need to know how each of you handles that. 4) Talk about domestic labour. Who cooks. Who cleans. Who remembers that you’ve run out of milk. The default in most households is that women carry the invisible load. If you don’t have this conversation before you move in, you’ll have it as an argument six months later. 5) Talk about what you expect the relationship to feel like once you live together. Some people think it will bring you closer. Some people are terrified it will expose something. Name it. 6) Talk about guests. How often. How much notice. How long they stay. Overnight? Your mum for a week? 7) Ask each other: why are we doing this. Is it because we want to, or because it feels like the next step? Moving in because the lease is up or because it’s cheaper is a practical decision dressed up as a romantic one. Save this for when you need it. Send this to the couple who’s about to move in.
