You can’t add to the finished work of Christ. None of your behavior adds to or takes away from the righteousness you received as a gift through faith in Him. Yet when people hear the good news of what Jesus has accomplished, the response is often, “Yeah, but…” followed by an appeal to our behavior, performance, or even the words of Jesus pulled out of their proper context and used to support a Jesus + self-effort gospel. Our words reveal where we’re placing our confidence—whether we’re resting in Christ and His finished work or looking to our own performance for assurance and righteousness. That doesn’t mean someone who struggles with this isn’t saved. A believer can genuinely trust in Christ and still be confused, struggle with performance-based thinking, or misunderstand Scripture. But our words can reveal the beliefs operating in our hearts and where we still need to grow in our understanding of the gospel. Jesus alone is the foundation of our righteousness. Our obedience does not establish that foundation, add to it, or maintain it. Our obedience grows from it. Fruit matters—but fruit is never the foundation. Jesus is. ❤️
