@draizident: There is a bacteria that millions of people are living with, and you may have it without even knowing. It is called H. pylori, and it is the most important infectious cause of stomach cancer worldwide. And considering how common this infection is in many parts of the world, including Nigeria, this is something we should take seriously. H. pylori can spread through contaminated food and water, particularly in settings where sanitation and water quality are poor. But there are two major mistakes people make. Number one: they think H. pylori only causes ulcer. You can have H. pylori without having any stomach pain at all. But the infection can cause chronic inflammation of the stomach and increase your risk of stomach cancer. Number two: they get the wrong test. Many people keep doing blood tests for H. pylori. But these tests detect antibodies, which can remain even after the infection is gone, so they don’t reliably tell you whether you currently have an active infection. Better options include the urea breath test, stool antigen test, or biopsy of the stomach lining during an endoscopy.
