My grandmother always praised my abilities for this instead of “so pretty”. So “I love your style today” or “ I love how you put this outfit together”. Etc. or a specific outfit element. “Blue is so nice on you. What a great color yellow. I like how you have green and pink together. That’s a perfect bow”. So you praise the cognitive ability behind the outfit not just the pretty girl.

Be a “commentator” & use expressive language. “Wow, that blue dress!” Simply name what you see with excitement.

We say fancy. My husband has always been adamant about that. She corrects us and says beautiful. She is our second born and does not care about our intentional parenting 😂😂

When she’s showing off her outfit you can point out - “oh Tate you seem like you like your outfit!” “how do you feel in that outfit?” turn it back to how she feels and what she thinks of the close instead of just the external validation

Maybe the issue is always pointing out the looks. “You look pretty…you look adorable…” etc. you could try “I love your tutu!…I love your dress!”

I always told my daughter “you’re beautiful “ and I say that even when she would point out she got dirty…. I always said it’s cause your beautiful no matter what you wear

We used fancy, but also made a point to tell my daughter how beautiful she is in all phases. I gush over her first thing in the morning the same as when she is all done up. We joke now that she is 19, that I might be biased because she is my daughter and looks like me, but she is stunning.

I tell my daughter she looks pretty all the time. Especially when she wakes up because of the thinking that I don’t her to think it’s what she’s wearing. I wear minimal makeup so I also don’t use the kind of language of I’m getting pretty she just knows it’s something I do like brushing my teeth.
