**Your savings account is quietly making you poorer.** Kenya's inflation hit 7.3% in October, the highest in more than three years. We are now just 0.2% below the CBK's upper limit of 7.5%. In plain terms, the KSh 100,000 that bought you a full basket of goods a year ago now buys about KSh 93,000 worth. Same money, smaller basket. And it's not just fuel anymore. Transport is up 17.1% and food 10.2%, but core inflation (everything outside food and fuel) is creeping up too. That's when inflation starts to stick. Meanwhile, other central banks are moving. The US Fed raised rates in September. Uganda made an emergency 2.25% hike to 12% to defend its shilling. The CBK held at 8.75% in October, but the December MPC is the final meeting of the year, and the pressure to hike is building. Still, a rate hike won't bring down global oil prices or reopen the Strait of Hormuz. So what does the CBK do? For you as an investor, the question is simpler: what is your real return? If your savings account pays 3% while inflation is at 7.3%, you're losing about 4% of your purchasing power every year. Anything that doesn't beat 7.3% after tax is losing ground.
