@thedogtorkristi: Chubby came to us after being attacked by a much larger dog. He sustained significant wounds that required surgery, but just 3 days after surgery, his sutures dehisced and we were faced with a completely different problem. At that point, we made the decision to stop trying to simply close the wound and instead let it heal through active wound management. That meant frequent bandage changes, careful wound monitoring, and a combination of Phovia light therapy and medical-grade Manuka honey to support the healing process. And this case is a good reminder that veterinary medicine doesn’t always follow your original plan. As GP veterinarians, we learn the principles of surgery, wound healing, infection control and patient care in veterinary school, but real patients don’t always read the textbook. Sometimes the best care means reassessing the situation, getting creative, and adapting your plan as the patient changes. For Chubby, that meant accepting that primary closure was no longer the goal. Our goal became creating the right environment for healthy granulation tissue and gradual wound healing. Wound management can be a long process, but with patience, frequent reassessment, appropriate therapies and a team committed to the patient, complicated wounds can heal beautifully. And yes, sometimes that means a LOT of bandage changes. 😂 Chubby’s case is a great example of why being a GP veterinarian is so much more than knowing how to diagnose and treat the most common conditions. It’s about knowing the fundamentals, recognizing when something isn’t going according to plan, and being willing to think outside the box for your patient. Thanks for your support ❤️❤️❤️ #veterinarian #vetmed #vettech #vetlife

this reminds me of a mass removal one of my doctors did on a spaniel several years ago. unfortunately it was in the groin, so the high movement/high tension (and owners removing the ecollar) caused it to dehisce. we didn't have a phovia unfortunately. but we did hydrotherapy multiple times a week, nsaids/sedatives, and allowed it to heal by second intention. it ended up healing beautifully.
