I believe that every child deserves to grow up in a safe environment, protected from forced marriage and any form of exploitation. Personal status laws should protect families and children equally, regardless of their religious or social background.
For this reason, I believe there should be serious reconsideration of the Jaafari Personal Status Law and any provisions that could place children, particularly young girls, at risk of early or forced marriage or weaken their legal protections.
A child should be given the opportunity to receive an education, develop safely, and make important decisions about marriage only when they are mature enough to understand the consequences. Protecting children should always be a priority.
Women and girls also deserve equal protection under the law. Family legislation should ensure that their rights, dignity, safety, and ability to make decisions about their own lives are respected.
Repealing or reforming provisions that may conflict with these protections would be an important step toward ensuring that Iraqi laws provide strong and consistent safeguards for children and women. This is not about attacking a religion or community; it is about ensuring that the law protects every person and that no child is placed in a situation they are too young to understand or freely choose.
