To everyone who has a voice that can be heard, and to everyone who has the ability to do something for women in Iraq and contribute to creating change: Please, help my voice reach women’s rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence is supposed to revolve around a husband and a child — that your worth is measured by how well you please them, how quietly you endure what is unbearable, and how much of yourself you are willing to sacrifice. And then, the very child you devoted your life to can be taken away from you. In my country, women have been given such a narrow space in which to live as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with our own dreams, choices, voices, and private lives. And now, even motherhood itself can be taken away from us. How much more must women lose before the world listens to us? Please, hear our voices. Please, help us be seen. And please, do not let Iraqi women continue to disappear behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never truly built to protect them.

Thank you so much for talking about us. I'd like to add that most of those taken from their mothers are mistreated by their husbands' wives or even their own fathers, and are subjected to sad/istic abuse. Some are even forced into marriage without their mothers' knowledge. The children cry, wanting their mothers, but the law and society mock them and laugh at their pain.
