Nobody warned me that having a baby would make me absolutely TERRIFIED of everything. 😭 Like I knew I’d be tired. I knew I’d be emotional. I knew my boobs would probably never belong to me again. But the anxiety??? Holy shit. I remember sitting in the nursery at 3:48am, holding my perfectly healthy, sleeping baby, and my brain was just going absolutely feral. Is she breathing okay? Was that noise normal? What if I fall asleep? What if something happens and I don’t notice? Should I Google that weird breathing thing? NO. DO NOT GOOGLE IT. Googles it anyway. 🙃 And suddenly I’m reading a forum from 2014 written by someone named BabyMama247 and convincing myself something terrible is about to happen. WHY ARE WE LIKE THIS. 😂😭 The weirdest part was how normal I could seem during the day. I’d be making breakfast, answering texts, telling everyone we were doing great. “She’s such a good baby!” “Everything’s going really well!” Meanwhile my brain had approximately 47 tabs open and 46 of them were worst-case scenarios. And nighttime made everything louder. The house would get quiet. Everyone would go to sleep. And I’d be sitting there listening to the baby monitor like I was personally responsible for keeping the entire universe functioning. I was exhausted but couldn’t relax. Desperate for sleep but scared to close my eyes. And honestly, I felt embarrassed about it. Because nobody else seemed to be talking about this part. Everyone talked about the sleepless nights and the feeding schedules and the diapers. But nobody really mentioned the way your brain can suddenly become a full-time security guard who NEVER clocks out. 🫠 Then one night I opened this app and saw all these little yellow lights on a map. Other moms awake. At 3:48 in the freaking morning. And I just sat there looking at them. Somewhere in Australia, a mom was awake. Somewhere in Virginia, another mom was awake. And they could send these little hugs to each other. No big conversation. No explaining why you’re awake. Just a tiny heart from another mom saying, “I’m here too.” 💗 And I don’t know why that made me so emotional. Maybe because I had spent so many nights feeling like I was the only person whose brain wouldn’t shut up. Maybe because I was tired of pretending I was fine. Or maybe because sometimes you don’t need somebody to tell you to relax. PLEASE. If I could relax, I WOULD. 😂 You just need someone who understands how exhausting it is to love someone so much that your brain starts inventing things to worry about. And the thing is, postpartum anxiety isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s checking the monitor again. Sometimes it’s being unable to sleep even when the baby is sleeping. Sometimes it’s needing reassurance about the same thing five times. Sometimes it’s feeling like you can’t switch off, even for a second. And sometimes it gets heavy enough that you need real support, not just another mom saying “same.” And that’s okay too. ❤️ I wish more of us talked about that. Because I spent so much time thinking I was supposed to be enjoying every second that I felt guilty for how scared I was. I loved my baby. I was grateful. I was also absolutely overwhelmed. All three things were true. So if you’re awake tonight with a sleeping baby and a brain that refuses to believe everything is okay, I hope you know you’re not the only one. There are other moms awake. Other moms who understand. And you deserve support that helps you feel safe enough to rest, too. Also, somebody please tell our brains that 3am is NOT an appropriate time to conduct a full investigation into every possible danger on earth😭💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momlife #newborn
