@wangarawiyyu: In the Middle Ages, Wangara scholars, commonly called Dioula, traveled from the imperial Mandé to the Sahel, Hausa country, and the great cities of West Africa. They brought Islam to Hausa society. Kano preserves their memory in two essential texts: the Kano Chronicle, which recounts their arrival under Yaji in 1380, and the Asl al-Wangariyyun, an Arabic manuscript dated 1650–1651, which describes another arrival under Muhammad Rumfa. The chronicle names their leader, ʿAbd al-Rahman Zaite, and lists around forty companions, showing they were considered important figures. Mandé Lawali became imam of all the Wangara and the chief men of Kano, while Zaite served as their judge.
