@lucydeemal: Night 1 of the Paytham Malkari Festival in 📍Lockhart River, on the east coast of Cape York. ♥️ The Kawadji Wiimpa Dancers Junior Team danced first, and you could feel just how strong culture, tradition and custom are here. I might be a little Cape York biased (hehe), but Lockhart River really is one of the most beautiful and unique places anywhere. The rainforest surrounding this community is proper different, with plants and animals here that cant be found anywhere else in the world. As a history nerd, I know this place is special for all the reasons we can read about in books - but being here reminds you that Lockhart River isn’t just a place with an incredible history. This is a living, strong, deadly community, looking to its future and working towards genuine place-based economic independence in very remote Cape York. Thank you to all the organisers, Elders and knowledge holders who continue to carry the torch for your old people, and to all the young ones who keep carrying culture forward. Strong Culture.
