An autopsy later determined that she had been beaten, bound, and shot at least once in the chest. The case sparked significant community outrage, particularly after her family revealed that her initial disappearance was dismissed by law enforcement as a standard runaway situation. The investigation into her homicide revealed a complex timeline involving several young individuals The San Diego Police Department identified Daniel Flores 19 years old at the time as the primary suspect in Anna's murder. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and authorities considered him armed and dangerous. Investigators believed he fled across the border into Mexico shortly after the crime. Two of Anna’s friends vanished around the same time she disappeared. A 12-year-old girl named Nelly Espinoza was located safe in Tijuana two weeks later and was ultimately charged in juvenile court as an accessory to the murder and cannot be identified Nelly was found in Tijuana by her grandfather. Her grandfather notified Baja California State Preventive Police and then brought his granddaughter to the border Officials then escorted Nelly to meet U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and San Diego police officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Friday afternoon, officials said. There, she was reunited with her mother after being interviewed by San Diego police. San Diego police issued a news release, stating that a minor was booked in juvenile hall in connection to Anna Hernandez's murder. A second friend, 16-year-old Janeth Mendoza, was named a person of interest and was believed to have fled to Mexico with Flores. Anna's family and community members highlighted that she had been sexually assaulted by two juvenile boys just two months prior to her murder in September 2015. Though those individuals pleaded guilty to the assault, the family maintained that the environment surrounding the teens was deeply volatile and filled with gang ties. Omg I was just looking her up last week. This happened when I was 15 years old not too far from where I lived. I remember everyone in school talking about it and a lot of people knew her. I still remember her case, my sister was friends with her and my mom knew her mom. Ana was rebellious but given her age it made sense, her mom would sell paletas in Logan heights and was the mom and dad so it was hard for her to watch over all her kids at once. I remember ana would be embarrassed of her which is weird cause in middle school she was nothing but nice, on fb she would always be posting about partying, dating multiple guys etc and I think it all happened when she went to a party. She was extremely rude to her mom and i genuinely felt bad for the mom cause she was desperate, I remember when she went missing she asked my mom to ask my sister if she knew where she was but my sister distanced herself from ana months ago cause she was hanging out with the wrong crowd and was over here starting drama with the wrong people. I feel like that’s why that happened to her and she lived in Logan heights so it makes sense, we all beloved she messed around with someone else’s bf who is or was gng related and they set her up and got back at her. When we found out we were in shock but not surprised, it saddens me bc the mom desperately needed money and was basically working all day. I moved from the area but I always wonder how her mom is doing 🥺

My mom and I went to her memorial site. I didn’t know her but I know she was pretty popular and I believe we went to the same school. People I knew at the time apparently knew who it was that murdered that poor girl but no one wanted to come forward. Very sad she lost her life and was discarded as if she didn’t matter. Rip Anna 💕

I didnt know her. but a bunch of my friends were close to her. I was devastated for everyone that went back to school the day after, some were at the party, some knew the killers and i was deeply disappointed. I went to memorial, and the day after her death was sooo full of somber, it feels like yesterday. I pray for her family everyday. she looked like a genuinely sweet soul to be around with.
