I'm playing a warlock, and during the story i had to break my contract with a fiend and make a new one with a celestial deity to just stay alive. now my fiend patron is hunting me down for betraying her and she uses everything she can, i mean everything... i dunno how I'm still alive

my warlock player was terrified of his patron. Everything he killed was condemned to hell & he had an unknown quota to fill. As a warforged he didn't make a pact, he was made with the pact built in by his creator. If he died he knew where he was going.

Had a group where patron would have not much impact, just be on the background... The group I am in now is totally different : there's contact, lore implications, other related npcs and so on, for all warlocks involved!

mine Is best Friends with hers, she AND her Patron are Like siblings they Love AND deeply Trust each other but also constandly tease each other playfully all the time. they do the dnd equivalent to clubbing Together . they fun flirt all the Time as well which Is funny because They would never actually Date because he is gay and both are Just Massiv flirts, so they fun flirt with each other and at taverns they wingman each Other. they also already were Friends before the pact, so i have a succubus like tiefling women whos best friend is a eonen old great old one. i love them deeply

In the last campaign I played a warlock: my patron was Hastur, the king in yellow and I was an escapee from his cult but I was still able to siphon his power. But the whole campaign hinged on me 1) never saying his name because there was always a possibility he'd see me and 2) being careful about how I used my power for the same reason. Eventually his aspect showed up when I was higher level but I was able to narrowly escape because of other, unrelated shenanigans.

if you don't possess contact patron you are required to visit someone who does if you want to communicate with whoever or whatever your patron is. my patron only ever introduced itself but has since been silent because I'm not high enough level yet to talk to it directly. as it stands my dm simply has the option to turn off my powers if my patron doesn't agree with something

The upcoming Western Reaches setting for Shadowdark has a cool way of handling this that can be easily adapted into DnD. Basically, patrons have specific alignments/goals and PCs have to do tasks for/on behalf of their patron. If a PC doesn't do those things or drifts away from their patron's alignment/goals, the patron cuts them off from using magic.

I was thinkin of trying one of those great Hexblade dip multis. But every level up I would have to beat a Wisdom DC otherwise I would have to take a level of Warlock. Like the will of the blade is so strong, right? And it wants my character to be more and more invested with it. DC would get harder too. Could turn into a really suboptimal but fun character.

The other huge problem - because of the one you just mentioned - is that optimizers and power gamers dip one level into warlock for the mechanical benefits and never have (seem?) to worry about their Patron at all. That's usually why Patrons get forgotten.

my characters patron is an eldritch being existing in another plane spying on worlds 👀, who has seen many wars and conflict and he manifests as a blade in our world. so my cute aristocrat elf, crying, finds this blade. they're trapped in an abusive and political system and is supposed to obey an arranged marriage they certainly don't want to. the patron was simply curious what would happen if he lands power to this elf... so he offers a pact, promising freedom. soo at the day of the wedding they blow up the entire ballroom and run away 🥰🥰

Wait there are dm’s who dont involve the patron in the plot at all??? What the hell are they doing, the warlock is like the one class with a built in plot hook and you’re just not using it?

The rule problem with warlocks is their gameplay. They have way too little spells(especially considering how few short rest can happen) and their entire gameplay boils down to eldritch blast spam, they are ridiculously front loaded to the point there is never a reason to go past level 4. Even in 2024 eldritch blast is still the best damaging cantrip in the game to the point it’s the only thing you do. With my own sorlock I ran into that problem so bad I made a concept of a magical item that would make eldritch blast effectively pointless in exchange of making the subclass of hexblade actually matter. Hell I even made a concept for a draconic warlock subclass where that was the whole gimmic, take an aspect from eldritch blast (whether that would be an eldritch invocation, it’s range, it’s damage or it’s multi hit effect)
