@calmmoneycoach: JUST HANDED A SEVERANCE PACKAGE? What to do before you sign, piece by piece Being let go late in your career is hard, and the money can take years to recover. Stats Can found long-service workers were often still earning 18 to 35 percent less 5 years later. Here's what I'd do, piece by piece, using Dana: 56, in Ontario, 33 years at one company, $104,000 salary, offered 12 months of pay. 1. Check the offer before you sign. Most provinces top out at 8 weeks of pay, $16,000 for Dana. Ontario adds severance pay on top, so her minimum is about $68,000, and courts have given people with her years up to about 24 months. Have an employment lawyer read it. You can deduct the fee. 2. Plan for the tax. Her employer holds back 30 percent, but a year of pay on top of 6 months of salary is taxed at about 45 percent at the top in Ontario, 38 in Alberta and 47 in Quebec. That's about $6,500 more owing in April. 3. Keep 6 to 12 months of cash, then use the RRSP. $36,000 sent straight from her employer to her RRSP cuts her tax bill by about $15,800. She pays tax when it comes out later. 4. Split it over 2 years if next year's income will be lower. $26,000 paid on 2 January saves her about $2,700. 5. Apply for EI within 4 weeks. A temporary rule lets EI start right away, so her money lasts 4.5 to 6.5 months longer. Ottawa has announced another year past October, so check it's still on when it's you. Been through a layoff? What do you wish someone had told you? The severance planner and the full guide are in my paid community at calmmoneycoach.com General education only. Dana is a made-up example. 2026 rules, and your province changes the numbers. #severance #layoffs #employmentinsurance #rrsp #personalfinancecanada

Mr. C :
Genuinely, though the common narrative is that it’s worse being laid off when you are older, I will die on the hill that being laid off in your 30s is worse than being laid off in your 50s. When you are close to retirement, you don’t really even need to save for retirement anymore since that money doesn’t have much time to grow. Every dollar you lose in your 30s or 40s has decades of time to grow and losing out on income early hurts the most. Plus you probably have a relatively new mortgage and kids. If you’re 56, you had every chance to be mortgage free and probably aren’t still raising dependants. You can extend your mortgage, you don’t really benefit from retirement saving as much. Being laid off in your 30s or 40s is way way worse. If I’m 56, I’m basically ready to retire. All the hard work is done, I’m just basically killing time with investments compound, the main function of working is NOT building wealth or surviving, I’m just delaying my RRSP drawdown by a year which will be worth more than any salary I could get.

I have a friend in Bc that was let go a month ago after 9yrs and was given about 16wks severence. Is he able to start collecting EI right now under the tariff relief program you mentioned? Or is that only for Ontario?

Great all around advice. I’ve used all of it at one time or another as I’ve been laid off three times over the years.

been at a work place 18yrs they are shutting down and being forced to find new work - loosing good pay-‘sick time- vacation and seniority - results is a lower paying job , starting from scratch with seniority and vacation . bc i found a new job i didn’t get seniority . they have a shut down date but have been laying ppl off slowly and have given no timeline for those left so lots have been forced to find work and loose out on any payouts. if an employer is closing they should be paying something out to long standing employees esp when ppl make plans to retire from said workplace

17 years with a company, roughly 18 months of salary/bonus, about $475K. Got a new job within a month making similar money. Was able to dump an extra $150K into RRSP’s over the years which should triple (or more) by the time I retire. I’ll likely be able to retire several years early as a result. I negotiated everything, brought it to a layer to review and they told me “great job, sign it”

Sure go get a lawyer and they will tell you they can only get you an extra 20k. So you sit and wait for any money for at least 6 months. Take the money and invest as much as you can in the stock market.

How does your employment contract impact your package if the company stipulates something specific at hiring?
