She’s not talking about a normal cleaning, an SRP is a deep cleaning that you get numb for and it has to get split into two appointments. A lot of times the patient is coming back in a couple days if not the next day to get the otherside done.

Fun fact for everyone in the comments: SRPs/“deep cleanings” (the treatment being described) are billed and scheduled per quadrant of the mouth, which is split upper/lower and left/right. The expectation for a regular cleaning is all of the teeth, SRPs are typically two quads but that can vary based on how it was scheduled

People commenting that hygienist are manipulative have no clue what those hygienist mean by “ that way they come back” it’s because we want them to finish their cleaning, bc we care about the patient, not for the money most of us are hourly and don’t get paid any different for a “regular”cleaning and a “deep”cleaning<-SRP. When a patient has to have a deep cleaning it’s bc they have periodontal disease. Sometimes patients will only do half the mouth and not come back which will only hurt the patient and progress the disease. So what they’re saying is they stop at the midline so the patient can feel the benefit/ difference of each side, which honestly takes self control bc most of us just want to keep going. They want to encourage them to come back and finish their treatment. We are typically only allowed to do half the mouth at a time for a multitude of reasons. Not to mention SRP tx is physically demanding on our body. It’s important to split this treatment up and make sure we’re doing the best job we can each visit.

I leave it so the patient can feel the difference when the numbing wears off and I also take an IO photo to show them! They ask for a sooner appointment after that 😂

I usually dont because typically that’s the area pts care about the most so if its all clean, they don’t feel like they have to come back for the other side 🤷🏼♀️also, I don’t want to half ass tx the area, I allow myself to just do it next appt so I have the time to really plane the roots
