@currentlyinscience: The Hōlei Sea Arch formed roughly 550 years ago when an ancient lava flow met the ocean, and waves slowly carved it into the dramatic arch millions of visitors photographed at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. It collapsed sometime between September 23 and 28, likely during Tropical Storm Nolo, the result of "differential erosion," where the ocean wears away softer layers of lava faster than harder ones, combined with years of earthquake damage from the 2018 Kilauea eruption. Park officials had actually warned for years that the arch was unstable, even labeling it a "temporary display of nature's handiwork." The same ocean that spent five centuries building it took less than a week to take it back. Source: CNN, National Park Service, Yahoo News

We just witnessed the earth doing earth things. I wonder where the rocks will be in another 500 years when we’re all long gone. I’m very appreciative of being alive with you all at this very moment in time . Peace and love yall

I find so much comfort in knowing no one was around to see it. We don’t have the exact date or time of when it fell. We just know that one day it was there, and another it wasn’t. Such a rare thing to capture, or not, a moment undisturbed by the watchful eyes of humanity.

Its kinda refreshing to see this happen naturally by erosion as opposed to pollution and global warming like a lot of things in nature that we see fall apart and wither away nowadays
