I like to think that the difference between Sam and Dean’s love language is the way they sacrifice themselves for each other. Dean’s instinct is to sacrifice himself to keep Sam safe—to protect him, no matter the cost. But Sam’s instinct is different. He wants to sacrifice himself so Dean can finally have a normal life, free from the responsibility of having a little brother who always needs his protection and care. Sam doesn’t just want to save Dean; he wants to free Dean from the burden of having to save him. And I think Sam’s guilt over having demon blood makes that desire even stronger. He is more willing to sacrifice himself if he believes his death can serve a greater good, because part of him feels that his life has caused Dean nothing but pain, worry, and responsibility.
