@thehistorypaige: They went to school that morning. Five little girls never came home. On October 2, 2006, a man entered the one-room West Nickel Mines Amish School in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He ordered the boys and adults to leave, then held the girls hostage. Ten girls were shot. Five died, and five survived with injuries. In the aftermath, members of the Amish community offered forgiveness and reached out to the shooter’s family. Some attended his funeral. Their compassion became part of the story the world remembered, but it did not erase their grief. Ten days later, before dawn, the schoolhouse was demolished. For the families, the consequences lasted long after the headlines faded. Rosanna King, just six when she was wounded, required lifelong care. She died in September 2024, at 23. Today marks twenty years. We remember the children whose lives were taken, the survivors, and the families who have carried this loss ever since. ABC News:Hours after learning about what Charles Roberts had done, a contingent of the grieving Amish came to visit [his wife].
Monville recalled that she was standing in her parents' kitchen, and she could see a group of the Amish walking towards her parents' home.
Her father offered to go outside and talk to them.
"And I couldn't hear the words they were saying, but I could see the exchange that was happening. I could see their arms extending. And the way they laid their hands on my dad's shoulder. I could feel it," she said.
"I could feel the emotion of the moment. You know, it said everything," she said, adding that her father said they had forgiven her husband. "They were concerned about me and concerned about the kids, and wanted us to know that they supported our family."
It didn't end there. When her family was besieged by media en route to bury Charles Roberts, the Amish stepped in again. Even though they don't like to have their pictures taken, members of the community placed themselves directly in front of news cameras to shield her family, Monville said.
"They turned their backs to the cameras so the only pictures that could be taken were of them and not of our family. And it was amazing to me that they would choose to do that for us," she said. "It was amazing. It was one of those moments during the week where my breath was taken away, but not because of the evil. But because of the love."

I watched a video posted by one of the daughters of the perpetrator this morning but can’t find it. She basically showed pics describing her view of a person she once loved but how she also felt other deep emotions.

I remember this happening. I felt so bad for these people. They leave everyone alone and this community suffered due to this. Some mothers struggled with forgiveness. Rest easy little girls

I remember that...what has always stayed with me was two things: the courage of the young teacher, trying to get the shooter to let them all go & she would stay in their place, and the admonition of one of the elders to other youngsters to NOT let that incident ruin their love of their fellow man, to not let hatred live in their hearts. And I think that has to be the most courageous thing to do.

I was 9mos pregnant with my 3rd child. I'm from Frederick MD which is only an hour and a half drive to Lancaster. A group of us were so emotional for their community we made the drive to show them support. We each took covered dishes We had learned to make from the same Amish community who had branched out our way. The somber town & scene was surreal. Still to this day, It feels like it was all a dream. God bless those families. Mrs. Graber (Ida) my thoughts are still with you.
