@cbcedmonton: PART 3: Rogers Place was meant to revitalize downtown Edmonton, but has that happened? As the arena marks its 10th anniversary, the CBC’s Brennan Klak explores its complicated history, its controversial ownership model and whether the Oilers Entertainment Group has too much power in downtown Edmonton. #RogersPlace #Edmonton #Oilers #edmontonoilers #alberta
Yes is the only right answer and anyone who has said otherwise is wrong.

The problem I see with the arena is that too much focus is being paid to the Ice District while the rest of downtown continues to be developed at a much slower pace.

It was worth the money. It brings in a lot of money through tourism as a result of the 30+ other NHL teams that play there as Well as the Oilers

I have a monthly meeting in downtown Edmonton with about 20 other people and we come from all around the province. Most of them stay out of the core because they don't feel safe downtown. It's fine on an event night because there are enough people around, but any other night is just too sketchy.

The problem is the city and generally will be. Poor planning and hopefully the easy transit will help … whenever it’s finished. The downtown should be a attraction

Did I miss something? I would have liked to hear more about the exact numbers. Exactly how much in tax dollars has it generated for the city in the 10 years vs the revenue for the co-owner. It has not revitalized downtown and pressure should be put on the co-owner to bring more events to the facility than they are.

and then everyone wonders why property taxes are so high, the city needs ways to make profit, instead of solely depending on property taxes to fund city operations, this is a prime example of how they had the opportunity to make revenue outside of property taxes and blew it!

Nope. We gave 500 million and millions more in concessions to a billionaire. The old arena was louder, had better parking, better accessibility and more room in the seats, stairs weren’t as dangerously steep

I just don't understand how anyone thinks it was a good deal. I'm not suggesting that building it was a bad idea or that it hasn't had a net positive effect on DT. But the structure of the agreement sold Edmonton tax payers down the river. 100% of revenue goes elsewhere, we paid for it to be built and a handful of businesses make profit, primarily Kaetz Group. the city should have demanded a percentage of sales revenue. Full Stop

no, it's a financial disaster for taxpayers. they steal from the community 50/50 that's supposed to go to charities.
