Singers, want to sing better immediately? Try this. Take the most difficult part of a song—something you can almost sing, but you strain, push, pull, crack, or flip trying to get through it. Now temporarily throw away the words. Step 1: Vocalize the passage on “new.” Step 2: Pick up a mirror and look bored while you sing it. No strange facial expressions, reaching for notes, looking up, or using unnecessary tension to help you. Let your voice show you what it wants to do. If it needs to lighten, flip, or even go into falsetto at first, let it. Your job is to find the coordination—not force the result. Do it 10 times, with the intention of making each repetition easier. Step 3: Switch to “nuh”—the vowel sound in wood, put, and good, with an N in front of it. This will help you bring a little more weight into the voice. Do another 10 repetitions, still watching yourself in the mirror. Step 4: Put the lyrics back in. Now pay attention. If the passage suddenly becomes harder, identify the exact word and vowel where the problem appears. There’s your roadmap. The vocalization helped you build the vocal line. The lyrics reveal where that coordination gets disrupted—and what actually needs your attention. Don’t cheat the steps. You’re only cheating yourself. Do this correctly, and you may be surprised how much better that passage feels immediately. #singersongwriterartist #singinginpublic #vocaltips #singinglessons #voiceteacher @Vocal Decoding
