Dressing: Zipping Up (off body) 🤐 Leila learnt how to zip up a jacket while it was placed on the table. Teaching it off the body first is intentional. When the jacket is on the table, Leila is not dealing with balance, awkward positioning, or trying to coordinate it on herself at the same time. It allows her to focus purely on lining up the zip and pulling it up. Zipping is not a simple skill. It involves coordination of both hands, visual attention, and fine motor control. One of the hardest parts is actually getting the zipper piece into the clip and starting it properly. That alone can be tricky. Then you add in moments where the zip gets stuck or does not move smoothly, and now the child has to figure out how to adjust it, reposition, or try again. If you try to teach all of that at once on the body, it can become frustrating and overwhelming very quickly. Starting off the body breaks the skill down and makes it more manageable. It also gives the child the chance to problem solve in a simpler setup. They learn what to do when the zip does not go in properly or when it gets stuck, without the added difficulty of wearing the jacket. Once Leila can do it confidently on the table, she already understands the steps and has worked through those small challenges. Moving it onto her body is then just about adjusting the skill, not learning it from the beginning. Skills should be built like this. Start simple, build confidence, then increase the difficulty. Not the other way around. #fyp #neurodivergent #foryou #autismawareness #autism @The Star Academy @Nthabiseng
