@healwithbritt: I’ve spent nearly fifteen years teaching a program called Rape Culture: A Survivor’s Perspective, and one thing I continue to believe deeply is this: men are not inherently bad. Making men the enemy will NOT prevent sexual violence. I say it in my programs, and I’ll say it here: we need men in this work. Not ashamed of their power, but empowered to use it well. Primary prevention asks us to intervene before the assault by RE-humanizing one another, cultivating empathy, teaching embodiment, talking openly about sex and intimacy, and creating cultures where men hold their friends to the same standards and values they hold themselves. A few places to begin: • For boys/young men: Lads: A Guide to Respect and Consent for Teenage Boys by Alan Bissett, Respect by Inti Chavez Perez, and Boys & Sex by Peggy Orenstein.
• For parents raising boys: Talk to Your Boys by Joanna Schroeder + Christopher Pepper and How to Raise a Boy by Michael Reichert.
• For younger children: Jayneen Sanders’ body-safety and consent books, including the Little BIG Chats series. Start conversations about bodies, boundaries, consent and safe relationships early…not when they’re already teenagers.
• For understanding campus sexual violence: watch The Hunting Ground.
• At home: talk about sex. Talk about pleasure, consent, pornography, autonomy, interpersonal cues, respect and what healthy intimacy actually looks like. If we avoid these conversations, our children still receive a sex education. We’ve simply handed the curriculum over to culture. And to survivors watching another case dominate the news, I see you. And I’m sorry. You deserve a world invested not only in responding to what happened to us, but in preventing it from happening to someone else. 🤎

You basically have to change patriarchal values and women can’t do that without men understanding the problem. Many men don’t see any need to change when the system has worked to give them power and control.

Would you consider doing a video on ways to talk to young boys about this? I have 3 young boys and want to do everything I can to raise them to use their power well.

As a mom raising a boy, I think it starts with how men play with and teach boys how to play. It's about pushing past the boy's comfort level, ignoring the other person's cues, and teaching that the other person's discomfort is fun. It's the attitude of "you're having fun, you just don't know it yet."

I heard some of my students talking about sex and said do you realize every word you just used was connected to violence? They went silent.

This, this for me has been the most disturbing part, the words in that text. 57/57 did nothing those odds are unacceptable. That woman was not treated as a human being

I saw a male podcaster say this issue won’t be fixed until men are taught to recognize their own humanity, instead of just seeing themselves as basically walking penises. Until that happens they will never see women as people.

This is a very good take. I think it's important that we stop enabling the gender tension and have the conversations that need to be had

I adore this framing, yes sister primary for intervention! And you have tremendous power! Shame is not the way empowering good humans to love other humans enough to examine and change and grow! I love it!

Patriarchy doesn’t support prevention/intervention; it supports post-incident punishment. Look beyond even the current topic - family law, homelessness, etc. Matriarchy humanizes everyone (including men) and looks at what humans need, equity, and intervention.

I think sex ed is nonexistent in most states, & in the states that used to have robust sex ed curriculums I get the sense it’s been scaled back significantly.

We need to remove ourselves, at the same time, from society. Cut them off from our energy. No working for us all until change happens. All women & allies.

This is the BEST vid I've seen on the Cornell7 issue. You bring actual solutions. What you say will be life-changing for men, as well as women, if men will listen to you.

It’s so frustrating that we have to baby them and coddle their egos to make them decent human beings. Women know rape is wrong. We didn’t need to be coddled to come to that realisation. In saying that, thank you for all you do, you’re amazing!

the current culture creates men who are very insecure about their masculinity. when you feel you don't fut the "ideal" you overcompensate in very insecure toxic ways. need more arts and culture programmes where boys learn to be vulnerable and expressive.

I helped run my college’s sexual assault hotline and we underwent extensive training and much of what our faculty advisor drilled into us was exactly this. We studied gendered violence as a public health crisis, as based in power dynamics broadly. Thank you for your work!
