@conscious.app: Europe just made it illegal for brands to call their products good for the planet, unless they can prove it. Since September 27, new European Union rules ban brands from calling products "green," "eco-friendly" or "sustainable" without officially recognized proof. Specific, true claims like "80% recycled cotton" are still allowed. Brands also can't invent their own eco badges, or call a product "climate neutral" because they paid to offset its pollution somewhere else. The rules cover anything sold in the EU, including products from American brands. In 2020, the European Commission, the EU's executive branch, found 53% of green claims on products were vague, misleading or unfounded, and 40% had no evidence behind them at all. A 2021 review of 12 major fashion brands by the advocacy group Changing Markets Foundation found 59% of their green claims broke UK guidelines on misleading marketing. H&M ranked worst, at 96%. The European Commission itself has said greenwashing puts genuinely sustainable companies at a disadvantage. Ethical brands that really are better for the planet do exist, but it's hard to tell them apart from brands that are only pretending. Support ethical & sustainable brands.
