One of the questions I get asked the most is: “Does being gene positive mean you’ll for sure develop symptoms?” The short answer is yes, but it’s not as simple as people think. Being gene positive means I have enough CAG repeats that, if I live a normal lifespan, the protein will eventually build up to the point where symptoms appear. Huntington’s doesn’t just start when symptoms show up. The brain actually begins to change years, sometimes decades before that. Over time, as more damage builds up, symptoms start to appear. That’s why it can look so different for everyone. My mom and I have the same number of repeats, and she started showing symptoms in her 30s.
