Operation Neptune, the airborne component of D-Day, dropped approximately 13,000 American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions into Normandy on the night of June 5-6 1944. German anti-aircraft fire dispersed the C-47 transport formations causing pilots to take evasive action that scattered soldiers across a wide area. Many sticks landed miles from their intended drop zones. German engineers had flooded the river valleys of the Cotentin Peninsula to a depth of 60-90cm in the months before the invasion using information not yet reflected in Allied intelligence maps. Several hundred paratroopers drowned in the flooded fields unable to rise under the weight of their equipment. Private John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment landed on the steeple of the church at Sainte-Mère-Église and hung there for approximately two hours feigning death while the town below was under German control. Each paratrooper carried up to 125kg of equipment including individual weapons, ammunition, food, demolition charges, first aid supplies and in many cases specialized equipment such as mortars, radios or bazooka rounds. La Fière causeway over the flooded Merderet River near Sainte-Mère-Église was 4 metres wide and approximately 500 metres long. Elements of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment held it for 72 hours against German infantry and armored counterattacks using bazookas at ranges of 20-30 metres, M1 Garand rifles and hand grenades with no anti-tank artillery support. The 90th Infantry Division crossed the causeway on June 9. The paratroopers who had held it since June 6 were still there. 📸 AI generated images for illustration purposes. #military #ww2 #History #dday #armedforcesfacts
